​On October 18-20, MPs from NATO and its partner countries gathered in Helsinki to discuss the change in the European security environment.

The 103rd Rose-Roth seminar discussed a wide range of security threats, such as hybrid threats and climate change, but also Russia's attack on Ukraine.

The discussions emphasized that it is necessary to further intensify international cooperation to respond to threats, and that both NATO and the entire international community must be united in the face of the Russian threat.

In the speeches, the idea was repeated that Ukraine should be supported on a long-term basis, and possible peace negotiations should be started on Ukraine's terms.

Based on the meeting, there is solid support for Finland's NATO membership. Finland is seen in the alliance as a producer of security, and Finland's model of national defence based on general conscription is valued.

On the closing day of the meeting, the participants got to know the Finnish defence concept and the Guard Jaeger Regiment in Santahamina. More than a hundred members of parliament and civil servants participated in the seminar.

Among others, President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö, Speaker of Parliament Matti Vanhanen, President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Gerald E. Connolly, Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto (Green Party Parliamentary Group) and Defence Minister Antti Kaikkonen (Centre Party Parliamentary Group) spoke at the seminar.

The Rose-Roth seminars were born in 1990 at the initiative of Charlie Rose, the then chairman of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and US Senator Bill Roth. Parliament organized the Rose-Roth seminar also in 2010.
