The speakers of Finland, Sweden and Türkiye discussed the parliamentary cooperation between the countries and its strengthening in a virtual meeting on September 7, 2022. The trilateral meeting was also attended by the chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of the foreign affairs committees.
"Through parliamentary contacts, we can increase mutual understanding between the countries," emphasized Speaker of Parliament Matti Vanhanen.
Speaker Vanhanen confirmed that with its NATO membership efforts, Finland aims to strengthen not only its own security, but that of the alliance as a whole. Finland takes Türkiey's security concerns very seriously. In addition, Finland is committed to the work of the Permanent Joint Mechanism between Finland, Sweden and Türkiye. Regarding Finland's upcoming parliamentary elections, Speaker Vanhanen stated that the broad parliamentary support to Finland's NATO membership application also binds the next parliament.
