The Grand Committee handled Finland's influence on the EU's urgent energy policy decisions

On 7 September, Parliament's Grand Committee discussed Finland's views on potential EU-level measures to respond to the electricity price crisis, preparations for next winter, and EU's financial aid to Ukraine.

The Grand Committee heard Minister of Finance Annika Saarikko (Centre Party Parliamentary Group) and Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä (Centre Party Parliamentary Group) before EU meetings. EU finance ministers will meet in Prague, Czech Republic on 9-10 September and the EU Energy Council will discuss the issues at its extraordinary meeting in Brussels on September 9.

Minister Lintilä said that the Energy Council will discuss the price and availability of energy. By the time of the meeting of the Grand Committee, the Commission had not submitted its proposals to respond to the acute crisis. However, Minister Lintilä said that he would bring up the so-called technical price ceiling, i.e. lowering the maximum price of power exchange offers in the EU, as well as issues related to collateral in the electricity derivatives market.

Ministers Saarikko and Lintilä described the situation as worrying and said that Finland has an open attitude towards the proposals coming from the Commission. In their discussion, the Grand Committee and the ministers emphasized the importance of ensuring the unity of the EU despite the very different situations of the member countries. It was stated in the discussion that the speed of the EU's actions is also a key factor.
