Speaker Vanhanen - In a busy autumn session, you also need to prepare for surprises

Speaker of Parliament Matti Vanhanen met with media representatives at the beginning of Parliament's autumn session on 6 September.

Annual session will last longer than usual next spring due to the parliamentary elections on April 2. According to the plenary session schedule, the last plenary will be held on March 3. The Government must submit its proposals to the current Parliament by November 17 at the latest.

Speaker Vanhanen said that he expects a time full of work, succinct discussions and also surprises caused by Russia's war in the coming months, referring to e.g. to the current energy policy situation.

Vanhanen reminded that the government and parliament must always be ready to deal with matters that come up quickly.

Parliament's autumn starts this week with an emphasis on energy policy. The handling of the third supplementary budget starts today and the parliament will receive the Prime Minister's announcement on energy policy on Thursday.

Other major themes in the coming weeks are housing policy, climate and energy policy in relation to the carbon neutrality target, equality policy and two citizens' initiatives, after which Parliament will begin the consideration of the 2023 state budget on September 20.
